The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language test for healthcare professionals. It is available for twelve professions, including medicine, and tests the English you use with patients and colleagues through listening, reading, writing and speaking sub-tests. Many health regulators and employers accept it as proof of English for registration or work.
It is written for doctors taking the OET for Medicine. Listening and Reading are the same test for every profession, so they suit anyone preparing for the OET. The Writing letters and Speaking role-plays are based on medical cases. Other professions may be added later.
Yes. Listening Test 1 is free to try, with no payment needed, so you can see the format, hear the recordings and check the marking before you decide to unlock the rest.
30 full Listening tests, 30 full Reading tests, 30 Writing letter tasks with model letters and an automatic comparison score, and 31 Speaking role-plays with recorded patients and model replies. Listening and Reading follow the real format of 42 questions each.
Listening and Reading are marked automatically, with an explanation for each answer. In Writing, your letter is compared with a model letter and a checklist, and you receive a score out of 100 for structure, key information, wording and length. This is not a marking of your English, and the score is not an OET grade. Speaking is not scored: you record yourself and compare with model replies.
No. All the material is original and written for preparation. HighYield is not affiliated with or endorsed by Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment, the owner of the OET. The tests follow the published structure of the exam so that the practice feels the same.
It depends on your regulator or employer. Many ask for grade B (350 to 440 on the 0 to 500 scale) in each of the four sub-tests, and some accept a lower grade in one or more of them. Always check the current requirement of the body you are applying to.
It varies with your starting level and your target. Many candidates spend several weeks to a few months. Start with one full test in each skill to find your weakest area, work on that first, and use the Results page to track progress.
Yes. OET Practice runs in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. For Speaking you need a microphone, and your recordings stay on your device.
