NUST NET vs ECAT: What’s the Difference?

Both are engineering entry tests built on the same FSc syllabus — but they’re run by different institutions, with different question styles. Here’s what actually differs.

If you’re applying to more than one engineering university in Pakistan, you’ve probably run into both NUST NET and ECAT and wondered whether prepping for one covers the other. The short answer: mostly, but not entirely.

Who Runs Each Test

ECAT is conducted by UET Lahore and accepted by UET’s own campuses and several other public/private engineering universities across Punjab.
NUST NET is conducted entirely by NUST itself, specifically for admission to NUST’s own engineering programmes. No other university uses a NUST NET score for admission.

What They Have in Common

Both tests draw on the same underlying academic base: FSc Pre-Engineering (or equivalent A-Level subjects), tested through Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and English MCQs. If you’ve built genuine conceptual understanding in these subjects, that foundation transfers between the two tests.

What Actually Differs

Question style and phrasing — each institution writes its own questions, and the way a concept is asked (how dense the wording is, how much calculation is embedded in a single question) differs between the two.
Subject weighting — the four subjects aren’t necessarily weighted identically between the two tests. Don’t assume a study plan optimised for one test’s weighting is optimal for the other without checking.
Test administration — format, timing, and number of questions are set independently by each institution and can change from year to year, so always check the current official notification for whichever test you’re sitting.

Should You Prepare for Both Separately?
