How to Prepare for SZABMU MD / MS Part-I: An 8-Week Study Plan

A practical 8-week plan for SZABMU Part-I built on the official weightage: where to start in Paper I, how to split Paper II revision, and when to switch to mock tests.

SZABMU Part-I is two papers of 100 MCQs each, and the paper tests a lot of ground at modest depth. The weightage is published, so the plan below spends time where the marks are. It assumes about two hours on weekdays and longer on weekends, over eight weeks. Adjust the pace to your own date.

Step 1: Know the Weightage

Paper I is Anatomy 30, Physiology 30, Pathology 20, Biochemistry 10 and Pharmacology 10. Paper II depends on your degree: applied medicine for MD, applied surgery for MS. The full tables are in the pattern and weightage guide.

Weeks 1 to 3: Paper I Core

  • Week 1: Anatomy first: upper and lower limb, thorax and abdomen, then head and neck. Practise topic-wise MCQs after each region.
  • Week 2: Physiology: cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, endocrine and neurophysiology.
  • Week 3: Pathology, with biochemistry and pharmacology as short daily blocks. These two are 10% each, so be efficient: pathways, enzyme deficiencies and drug classes.

Weeks 4 to 6: Paper II

  • MD candidates: rotate through cardiovascular, respiratory, gastroenterology, hepatology and nephrology, neurology, endocrinology and haematology, saving fluids and electrolytes, infection and sepsis, immunology and ICU for the shorter days.
  • MS candidates: begin with fluids and electrolytes and inflammation and sepsis (35% between them), then endocrine, GIT, neurosurgery and gynae/obs, with orthopaedics, urology, ENT/eye, infections and anaesthesia as lighter blocks.

Use the topic-wise practice in the SZABMU MD QBank or SZABMU MS QBank: do a block of 30 to 50 MCQs, then read every explanation, including those for questions you got right.

Weeks 7 and 8: Mocks and Weak Spots

Take a full 100-question paper in 180 minutes, then review it. A good rhythm is one Paper I mock and one Paper II mock a week, with the remaining days spent on the topics your analytics flag. The mock test guide explains how the blueprint-weighted mocks are built.

Habits That Raise Scores

  • Keep an error log: write down the fact, not the question.
  • Learn the question stems that repeat: "most common site", "investigation of choice", "drug of choice".
  • Do not leave small topics out. Five marks in immunology are worth the same as five in anatomy.
  • Sleep before the paper; accuracy drops fast on a tired brain across 100 questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I prepare for SZABMU Part-I?

Eight weeks of steady work is realistic if your basic sciences are reasonably fresh; allow longer if it has been several years since you studied them.

Which subject should I start with?

Anatomy and physiology: together they are 60% of Paper I.

How many mocks should I take?

At least two full Paper I and two full Paper II papers in the last two weeks, each followed by a careful review.

Practise With Explanations

The SZABMU MD QBank groups its MCQs by the official Paper I and Paper II topics, with an explanation for every question and topic analytics to show where marks are leaking. The first 20 questions are free, and the mock tests come included with the QBank. The MS bank shares the same Paper I core and swaps Paper II for applied surgery.
