FCPS Part 1 Pass Rate: Tips to Improve Your Chances of Passing
Nobody can promise you a pass, but a few habits consistently separate candidates who clear FCPS Part 1 from those who retake. Here is what you can control.

“What is the pass rate for FCPS Part 1?” is one of the most common questions candidates ask, and also one of the least useful. Pass rates vary by specialty and sitting, and a general figure tells you nothing about your odds. What matters is the handful of things within your control. This guide focuses on those.
First, Understand How the Exam Works
FCPS Part 1 is entirely MCQ-based, with no clinical or essay component at this stage, and it covers the basic sciences relevant to your specialty. As we explain in FCPS Part 1 passing criteria, CPSP applies statistical analysis to the paper rather than simply counting raw marks, so you can’t reverse-engineer a safe target score. Your best strategy is broad, solid preparation. Check the latest schedule on our FCPS Part 1 dates and results page and the eligibility details in the complete FCPS Part 1 guide.
Tip 1: Prepare Broadly, Not Narrowly
Because the paper draws on several basic science subjects, being excellent in two and weak in the rest is a risky plan. Map every subject in your specialty’s syllabus and aim for an even baseline first, then deepen the high-yield areas.
Tip 2: Start Early and Work Backwards From Your Exam Date
Last-minute cramming doesn’t cover a syllabus this wide. Count the weeks you have, split them between learning the content, mixed practice and full-length mocks, and protect time for revision. Our FCPS Part 1 preparation guide lays out a timeline and book recommendations.
Tip 3: Practise MCQs Every Day
Reading alone builds familiarity, not the ability to pick the right option under pressure. Make daily MCQ practice the core of your routine, and read every explanation, including for questions you got right. Active recall consistently beats rereading for exams like this.
Tip 4: Track Weak Areas and Fix Them Deliberately
Keep a record of the subjects where your accuracy is lowest and give them a larger share of your week. A QBank with subject-wise analytics makes this far easier than guessing. Re-attempt your wrong questions a few days later to see whether the gap has actually closed.
Tip 5: Use Past Papers as a Guide, Not a Shortcut
Recalled and past papers show you the style and emphasis of questions, but exact repeats are never guaranteed and recalled papers often contain errors. Use them to understand the pattern, and learn the underlying concepts. See how to use FCPS Part 1 past papers.
Tip 6: Simulate the Exam Before the Exam
Do several full-length papers in timed mode in the last few weeks, under realistic conditions with no breaks you wouldn’t get on the day. Practice builds pacing and stamina, and reveals whether anxiety or speed is costing you marks. Our guide to the Paper 1 and Paper 2 mock test format explains how to structure this.
Tip 7: Attempt Every Question
There is no negative marking in FCPS Part 1, so leaving a question blank can only cost you. If you’re unsure, eliminate what you can and choose the best remaining option.
Tip 8: Protect Your Last Week
In the final days, review your weak-area notes, bookmarked questions and high-yield summaries rather than starting new material. Sleep properly, confirm your exam centre and documents, and keep your routine steady.
What If You Don’t Pass?
Many strong candidates need more than one attempt. If it happens, use your result as feedback: identify the subjects that held you back and rebuild your plan around them. That’s a better use of the next attempt than repeating the same approach.
