UET ECAT Syllabus & Structure

The ECAT is the entry test for engineering and computing programmes at the University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore and its affiliated campuses. It is drawn from the complete FSc Part I and Part II syllabus — there is no separate ECAT curriculum to learn. What decides your place, though, is not the ECAT alone: it is one of three components in the merit formula. Here is how the whole thing fits together.

Subject weightage

Which of the paired subjects you sit depends on your group — engineering candidates take Mathematics and Chemistry, while candidates from other backgrounds may sit Biology or Computer Science in their place.

The merit formula is what actually decides admission

  • Merit = 50% FSc + 33% ECAT + 17% Matric.
  • Your FSc marks carry the single largest share — half of your merit is already fixed before you sit the test.
  • The ECAT is a third of the formula, and it is the only part you can still change. A strong ECAT can lift a mid-range FSc; a weak one wastes a strong FSc.
  • Matric contributes 17% and, like FSc, is already locked in.

Eligibility

  • Engineering programmes: a minimum of 60% marks in FSc (or equivalent).
  • Computer Science / computing programmes: a minimum of 50% marks in FSc (or equivalent).
  • The test content follows the full FSc Part I and Part II syllabus, so no additional curriculum is required.

Test centres and when it is held

UET runs the ECAT at centres in Lahore, Faisalabad, Narowal, Gujranwala and Kala Shah Kaku (KSK). You choose your centre during registration, so apply early if you want a specific one.

The test is normally offered in two rounds each admission cycle — an earlier round around March/April and a second around June — each with its own registration window and fee (Rs. 3,000 per round in the most recent cycle). Sitting the first round gives you the option of retaking in the second if you are unhappy with your score. Exact dates move every year, so confirm the current schedule on the UET admissions site before planning around them.

What this means for how you prepare

  • No negative marking: never leave a question blank. A guess can score; a blank cannot.
  • 100 MCQs in 100 minutes is roughly one minute per question — pace matters as much as knowledge, so practise under a timer.
  • Maths, Physics and Chemistry carry 90% of the marks between them. English is only 10 MCQs — worth securing, but not worth heavy study time.
  • The syllabus is just your FSc course. The differentiator is speed and accuracy on questions you already broadly know, which is what timed MCQ practice builds.

Frequently asked questions

How many MCQs are in the UET ECAT and how long is it?+

100 MCQs in 100 minutes, carrying 400 marks in total — so each MCQ is worth 4 marks and you have about a minute per question.

Is there negative marking in the ECAT?+

No. Wrong answers are not penalised, so attempt every question.

How is ECAT merit calculated?+

50% from your FSc marks, 33% from your ECAT score and 17% from Matric. The ECAT is the only component you can still influence.

What marks do I need to be eligible?+

At least 60% in FSc for engineering programmes, or 50% for Computer Science / computing programmes.

What syllabus does the ECAT cover?+

The complete FSc Part I and Part II syllabus. There is no separate ECAT curriculum.

Can I sit the test more than once?+

UET normally holds two rounds per admission cycle, so candidates can sit an earlier round and retake in the later one. Confirm the current cycle's rounds and dates with UET.
