NED University Entry Test Syllabus & Structure
NED University of Engineering & Technology runs a computer-based entry test for its engineering and computing programmes. Two things set it apart: the entry test carries more merit weight here than almost anywhere else — 60% of your aggregate — and the paper is split evenly across four subjects, so there is no single subject to lean on.
The entry test carries most of your merit here
- Merit = 60% entry test + 40% HSC.
- That is the reverse of the UET ECAT, where FSc is 50% and the test only 33%. At NED the test is the dominant component.
- NED runs the test in two phases and the higher of your scores counts, so an earlier attempt costs you nothing.
Structure
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Total MCQs | 100 |
| Duration | 120 minutes |
| Format | Computer-based |
| Negative marking | None |
| Calculators | Allowed |
| Phases | Two per cycle — the higher score counts |
| Syllabus | Class XI & XII (Sindh Textbook Board / FSc curriculum) |
Subject weightage
The fourth subject depends on your group — Chemistry for pre-engineering, Computer Science for CS applicants.
| Subject | MCQs | Group |
|---|---|---|
| English | 25 | Both |
| Mathematics | 25 | Both |
| Physics | 25 | Both |
| Chemistry | 25 | Pre-Engineering |
| Computer Science | 25 | CS applicants |
| Total | 100 |
What this means for how you prepare
- All four subjects are worth exactly 25 MCQs. Neglecting one costs you a full quarter of the paper — English included, which is weighted far more heavily here than in the UET ECAT.
- Calculators are allowed, which changes how you should practise the numerical work — do not drill mental-arithmetic shortcuts you will not need.
- No negative marking: never leave a question blank.
- Because the test is 60% of merit, improving your test score moves your aggregate more than at any other university on this list.
Frequently asked questions
How is NED merit calculated?+
60% from the entry test and 40% from your HSC marks — the test is the larger share.
Are calculators allowed in the NED entry test?+
Yes.
Is there negative marking?+
No, so attempt every question.
Can I sit the test twice?+
NED runs two phases per cycle and the higher score is used for merit.
What is the fourth subject?+
Chemistry if you are a pre-engineering applicant, or Computer Science if you are applying for CS. English, Mathematics and Physics are common to both.
