What Is OET? Full Form, Meaning and Who Needs It
OET stands for Occupational English Test. What it is, which professions take it, and why doctors and nurses choose it for the UK, Australia and other countries.

OET stands for Occupational English Test. It is an English language test for healthcare professionals, built around real workplace communication such as consultations, handovers and referral letters, rather than general academic English.
What OET Tests
There are four sub-tests: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The content is health-related and, for Writing and Speaking, specific to your profession.
Which Professions Can Take It
OET is offered for 12 healthcare professions, including medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy and veterinary science. Doctors take the Medicine version. See which parts are the same or different across professions.
Who Needs It
Healthcare regulators and employers in several countries accept OET as proof of English proficiency for registration or visas. Doctors from Pakistan most often meet it when planning to work in the UK, Australia, Ireland or New Zealand. Requirements differ by regulator and change over time, so check the current page of the body you are applying to.
OET or IELTS?
Many regulators accept both. OET uses clinical material, which suits doctors who already know the content; IELTS is a general test. Our comparison is in OET vs IELTS for doctors.
