OET on Computer vs Paper vs OET at Home: Which Should You Choose?

The differences between paper-based OET, OET on computer and OET@Home, and how to choose based on your strengths and what your regulator accepts.

OET is offered in more than one delivery format. The content and scoring scale are the same; what changes is how you take the test and how fast results come.

The Three Formats

  • OET on paper: taken at a test venue, with handwritten Writing and a live Speaking interview.
  • OET on computer: taken at a test venue, typed Writing and often quicker results.
  • OET@Home: taken remotely on your own computer under online supervision, if available in your location.

Availability of each format varies by country and changes over time, so check which is on offer for your dates.

How to Choose

  • Typing speed: if you type quickly, the computer-based Writing is easier to revise and keeps your letter tidy.
  • Handwriting: if your handwriting is slow or hard to read, avoid paper.
  • Environment: OET@Home needs a quiet room, a stable connection and a compatible device; a venue removes that risk.
  • Regulator: confirm that the format you pick is accepted.

Practise in the Format You Pick

If you choose computer, practise typing letters against the clock. The writing practice section lets you type a letter from case notes and compare it with a model.
