FCPS Pakistan vs FCPS India: Why Both Exist and Which One You Need

Pakistan and India each have a separate qualification called FCPS. Learn the difference between CPSP's FCPS Pakistan and CPS Mumbai's FCPS India, and MCI/NMC recognition.

If you searched “FCPS Medicine in India” or “is FCPS Medicine recognised by MCI,” there is an important clarification you need before going any further: Pakistan and India each have their own, entirely separate qualification called FCPS, awarded by two different, unrelated institutions. Confusing the two can lead you to the wrong exam, the wrong syllabus, or the wrong regulatory body entirely.

Two Different “FCPS” Qualifications Exist

These are two independent institutions with no formal relationship — they simply happen to share the same abbreviation, a coincidence rooted in both following the historical British “College of Physicians and Surgeons” naming convention used across former Commonwealth countries.

Is FCPS Recognised by MCI/NMC?

This depends entirely on which FCPS you mean:

  • FCPS India (CPS Mumbai): this qualification is an India-specific postgraduate medical credential, and reporting from Indian medical education sources indicates it is recognised within India’s regulatory framework, generally treated at par with MD/MS degrees for practice and government employment eligibility. If you are an Indian student researching this qualification, confirm current recognition status directly with NMC and CPS Mumbai, since regulatory positions can be updated.
  • FCPS Pakistan (CPSP): this is a distinct qualification under Pakistan’s own regulatory system (PMDC/PMC) and is not the qualification being referenced by most “FCPS recognised by MCI” searches, since MCI/NMC’s recognition framework primarily addresses the India-awarded qualification.

If your goal is specifically to understand how Pakistan’s FCPS is recognised internationally — including in the UK, Gulf countries, and elsewhere — see our FCPS Pakistan international recognition guide, which covers this in detail.

Which One Are You Actually Looking For?

  • If you are a Pakistani MBBS graduate planning postgraduate specialisation within Pakistan, you want FCPS Pakistan (CPSP) — see our complete FCPS Pakistan career guide.
  • If you are an Indian MBBS graduate researching a CPS Mumbai-style postgraduate diploma/fellowship route as an alternative to MD/MS, you want information specific to CPS Mumbai’s FCPS, which is outside the scope of this Pakistan-focused platform — consult CPS Mumbai’s official resources directly for that qualification’s syllabus, fees, and eligibility.
