The Intermediate Module in Medicine, usually shortened to IMM, is the mid-training exam that trainees in Medicine sit under the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). It sits between the basic-science Part 1 exam and the final Part 2 exam, and it is the point where the assessment turns fully clinical.
What the IMM Tests
Where Part 1 tests basic sciences applied to medicine, IMM tests clinical medicine: recognising a presentation, choosing the next investigation, and selecting the best treatment. The written component is MCQs built from case vignettes across the medical specialties, and there is also a clinical, station-based component known as TOACS. How to Prepare for the MCQ Paper
- Start from a standard text and your ward work. Vignette questions reward people who have seen the presentations.
- Practise MCQs by subject first, then mixed. Subject blocks build knowledge; mixed blocks train you to switch context like the real paper.
- Read every explanation. The reasoning is where the transferable learning is, and the distractors are often the next question.
- Time yourself. Do at least a few full-length timed sessions before the exam.
- Review your weak subjects weekly using per-subject accuracy rather than gut feeling.
