KMU CAT (Combined Admission Test): What It Is and How to Prepare

What the KMU CAT is, how it differs from the MDCAT, who needs to take it (nursing and allied health programmes), registration steps, and test dates.

If you are applying for nursing, allied health sciences, or certain other non-MDCAT programmes at KMU or its affiliated institutes, you will encounter the KMU CAT rather than the MDCAT. This guide explains what the KMU CAT is, who needs to take it, and how registration and dates work.

What Is the KMU CAT?

KMU CAT stands for the Combined Admission Test conducted by Khyber Medical University. It is a separate entrance test from the MDCAT, used for admission to KMU-affiliated programmes that are not MBBS/BDS - most commonly nursing programmes (BSN, Post-RN) and allied health sciences programmes such as DPT, Pharm-D, and medical technology courses.

KMU CAT vs MDCAT: What Is the Difference?

Make sure you know which test your target programme requires - this is confirmed in the programme details in the KMU prospectus when you register. For MBBS/BDS applicants, see our KMU MDCAT result guide instead.

KMU CAT Registration

KMU CAT registration is completed through the same official KMU online portal used for general admissions (kmu.edu.pk). See our full KMU admission and online registration guide for the step-by-step process. When registering, make sure you select the correct programme and confirm that it requires the KMU CAT rather than the MDCAT.

KMU CAT Test Dates

The KMU CAT is typically held once per admission cycle, with registration opening a few weeks to a couple of months beforehand. Historically, KMU CAT test dates have generally followed the broader admission cycle timeline in the province, often in the latter part of the year, though exact dates have varied - always confirm the current cycle’s date directly on kmu.edu.pk rather than relying on a previous year’s date.

How to Prepare for the KMU CAT

  • Review your FSc-level science fundamentals - the test draws heavily on your Matric and FSc coursework, similar in spirit to the MDCAT but often with a different mix of subjects depending on your target programme.
  • Practise MCQs consistently. Regular multiple-choice practice under timed conditions builds the speed and accuracy the test rewards.
  • Check the specific syllabus for your programme. Nursing and allied health programmes can have different subject weightings - confirm this in your admission prospectus rather than assuming it matches the MDCAT exactly.

After the KMU CAT: Results and Merit

Once results are announced, KMU calculates your aggregate using its programme-specific formula and releases merit lists in rounds - the same general process as MDCAT-track admissions. See our guides on the KMU aggregate formula and KMU results and merit lists for the full process, including our coverage of how to check results on the KMU portal.
