What is MDCAT? Complete Overview of Pakistan's Medical Entry Test

A comprehensive overview of the MDCAT exam — what it is, who conducts it, syllabus, scoring, and why it matters for medical admissions in Pakistan.

MDCAT stands for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test. It is the single most important exam for any student who wants to study MBBS or BDS at a medical or dental college in Pakistan. Conducted by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC), the MDCAT determines your eligibility and ranking for admission to both public and private medical institutions across the country.

MDCAT Full Form and History

MDCAT stands for Medical and Dental College Admission Test. Before 2020, each province conducted its own entry test — UHS MCAT in Punjab, ETEA in KPK, and separate tests in Sindh and Balochistan. In 2020, PMC introduced a single national MDCAT to standardize medical admissions across Pakistan.

Who Conducts MDCAT?

The Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) is the sole authority responsible for conducting MDCAT. PMC replaced the old Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) in 2020. PMC designs the syllabus, sets the paper, manages registration, and declares results.

MDCAT Exam Pattern

The MDCAT is a computer-based test (CBT) with the following structure:

  • Total questions: 200 MCQs
  • Total marks: 200
  • Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes (210 minutes)
  • Negative marking: No (in recent years PMC has not applied negative marking)

English2020

Biology carries the highest weightage, making it the most important subject for your MDCAT preparation.

MDCAT Syllabus Overview

The MDCAT syllabus is based on the FSc Pre-Medical curriculum. Key topics include:

  • Biology: Cell biology, genetics, evolution, human physiology (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, nervous systems), biotechnology, ecology
  • Chemistry: Atomic structure, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, organic chemistry (hydrocarbons, functional groups, reaction mechanisms)
  • Physics: Mechanics, waves, optics, electricity, magnetism, modern physics, nuclear physics
  • English: Vocabulary, grammar, sentence correction, reading comprehension

Why MDCAT Matters

Your MDCAT score is used to calculate your aggregate for medical college admissions. The typical aggregate formula is:

  • MDCAT score: 50%
  • FSc marks: 40%
  • Matric marks: 10%

This means MDCAT carries half your total weightage — more than FSc and Matric combined. A high MDCAT score can compensate for slightly lower board marks.

MDCAT Scoring and Passing Marks

There is no official "passing" score for MDCAT. However, you need a minimum score to be eligible for admissions. In recent years, PMC has set a minimum threshold around 55–60% to qualify for merit lists. The actual merit cutoff depends on competition — for top colleges like King Edward Medical University (KEMU), aggregates above 90% are typically required.

How to Prepare for MDCAT

  • Start early — Begin focused MDCAT preparation at least 3–4 months before the test.
  • Use the PMC syllabus — Study only what is in the official syllabus. Do not waste time on out-of-syllabus content.
  • Practice MCQs daily — Solve at least 100 MCQs every day from past papers and practice tests.
  • Take mock tests — Simulate real exam conditions weekly to build speed and stamina.
  • Focus on Biology — It is 40% of your paper. Master every chapter thoroughly.

MDCAT vs Other Entry Tests

MDCAT is required for all medical colleges in Pakistan. However, some institutions conduct separate tests in addition:

  • NUMS — Army Medical College and affiliated colleges require the NUMS entry test separately.
  • Aga Khan University — AKU has its own admission test and does not use MDCAT.

For all other public and private medical colleges, MDCAT is the only entry test required.

Understanding MDCAT thoroughly is the first step to a successful medical career in Pakistan. Start preparing early, stay consistent, and practice as many MCQs as you can.
