Federal Board (FBISE) Explained: What It Is and Who It Examines
What the Federal Board (FBISE) is, how it differs from provincial boards like BISE Lahore or Peshawar, and what it means for your Matric or FSc result.

“Federal Board” is one of the most-searched education terms in Pakistan, and for good reason - it is the examining body for hundreds of thousands of Matric and Intermediate students in Islamabad, cantonment and garrison areas, and Pakistani schools abroad. This guide explains exactly what the Federal Board is and how it fits into the national education system.
What Is the Federal Board?
The Federal Board is short for the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE), headquartered in Islamabad. It is the examining authority for Matriculation (9th and 10th grade / SSC) and Intermediate (11th and 12th grade / HSSC, including FSc) for institutions in the Islamabad Capital Territory, cantonment and garrison schools and colleges across Pakistan, and Pakistani curriculum schools operating overseas.
Federal Board vs Provincial Boards
Pakistan does not have a single national examination board - instead, education is examined regionally:
- Provincial boards (such as BISE Lahore, BISE Peshawar, BISE Karachi, and others) examine students within their respective provinces.
- The Federal Board (FBISE) examines students in federally administered areas, cantonment/garrison institutions nationwide (regardless of which province they are physically located in), and Pakistani schools abroad.
This is why a school in, say, Lahore or Karachi might still be affiliated with the Federal Board rather than its local provincial board, if it operates as a cantonment or garrison institution.
What Does the Federal Board Examine?
FBISE conducts examinations and declares results for:
- Matriculation / SSC - Class 9 and Class 10
- Intermediate / HSSC - 1st Year and 2nd Year, including FSc Pre-Medical, FSc Pre-Engineering, FA, and ICS
For a complete breakdown of what FSc itself means and its subject streams, see our guides on what FSc stands for and FSc Pre-Medical and Pre-Engineering subjects.
The Federal Board Official Website
The official FBISE website is the authoritative source for date sheets, results, registration, and rechecking requests. Always verify you are on the genuine fbise.edu.pk domain - unofficial "federal board result" sites are extremely common during result season and frequently display outdated, incorrect, or ad-laden versions of official information.
Federal Board Result Season: What to Expect
FBISE typically announces Matric (Class 9 and Class 10) results and Intermediate (1st Year and 2nd Year) results on separate dates during the summer result season, usually a few weeks apart. Exact dates shift each year based on the exam and marking schedule, so treat any specific date from a previous year only as a rough guide. For the complete step-by-step process of checking your result once it is declared, see our Federal Board result 2025 checking guide.
Why the Federal Board Matters for MDCAT and ECAT Aspirants
If you completed your Intermediate (FSc) under the Federal Board, your HSSC result feeds directly into your medical or engineering admission aggregate in exactly the same way as a provincial board result does - the admitting university does not distinguish between boards for aggregate calculation purposes, only for verifying your marks. What matters for MDCAT/ECAT preparation is the same regardless of which board issued your FSc certificate.
