FCPS IMM Medicine Past Papers and Recalls: How to Use Them

Recalled questions and past-paper style practice are the backbone of IMM Medicine preparation, but most candidates use them badly: they read the answers, feel familiar with them, and stop. Familiarity is not recall. Here is a better method.

Why Recalls Are Useful, and Their Limits

IMM vignettes repeat concepts, and recalls show you which concepts and how the questions are framed. Their limits are just as important: recalled answer keys can be wrong or contested, wording is often approximate, and no bank is the actual paper. Use them to learn patterns, and cross-check any answer that surprises you against a standard textbook.

A Method That Works

1. Attempt before you look. Commit to an answer for every question, even a guess.
2. Read the explanation, not just the key. Note the one fact that decided the question.
3. Write down the concept, not the answer. "Rifampicin lowers OCP levels" is reusable; "answer B" is not.
4. Revisit misses after a few days. Spaced repetition beats a single pass.
5. Look for the same idea in different wording. The exam re-tests concepts, so several phrasings of one idea are worth learning together.

Common Mistakes

• Memorising a bank instead of understanding it.
• Ignoring general medicine topics such as drug side effects and toxicology, which are heavily represented.
• Practising only your favourite specialty.
• Trusting a single answer key without checking.
