You do not need ten textbooks. Both SCFHS and DHA publish suggested references, and both say the exam is not drawn from those books. They are a study aid. The sensible approach is one reference per discipline, then questions.

SMLE: the official reference list

  • Medicine: Toronto Notes.
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology: Hacker and Moore's Essentials of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Current Diagnosis and Treatment: Obstetrics and Gynecology; Gynaecology by Ten Teachers; Llewellyn-Jones Fundamentals of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • Pediatrics: Pediatrics for Medical Students; Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics; Illustrated Textbook of Pediatrics.
  • Surgery: Current Surgical Therapy; Bailey and Love's Short Practice of Surgery; The Mont Reid Surgical Handbook.
  • Safety, preventive medicine and ethics: WHO Patient Safety Curriculum Guide; Jekel's Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Preventive Medicine and Public Health; USPSTF Guide to Clinical Preventive Services; SCFHS Professionalism and Ethics Handbook.

DHA General Practice: the official reference list

  • Toronto Notes; Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine; Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine (19th ed.); Kumar and Clark's Clinical Medicine (9th ed.).
  • Hacker and Moore's Essentials of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Current Diagnosis and Treatment Obstetrics and Gynecology; Gynaecology by Ten Teachers; Llewellyn-Jones Fundamentals of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
  • Pediatrics for Medical Students; Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics.

Notice the overlap: Toronto Notes, the OB/GYN set and the pediatric texts appear on both lists. That is why one preparation base supports both exams.

A lean resource stack

  1. Toronto Notes as your compact reference for Medicine and the other disciplines.
  2. The official blueprint or topic list as your checklist: SCFHS's blueprint for SMLE, DHA's coverage list for GP.
  3. A question bank with explanations for daily practice and mocks. Look for one-line explanations, timed mode and a blueprint-aligned mix. See how to choose an SMLE question bank.
  4. The official SCFHS practice exam, which SCFHS offers from its site, to feel the interface.

What to skip

  • Large specialist textbooks. Neither exam is specialist depth for a general candidate.
  • Leaked or "recalled" PDFs. Both regulators prohibit sharing exam content, and recalled questions are often wrong.
  • Unlimited free question dumps with no explanations. You learn from the reasoning.

Pair these books with the SMLE QBank or the DHA QBank. Both include mock exams for timed practice.

Exam rules change. Everything above comes from the SCFHS SMLE content guideline and the DHA CBT guideline; confirm the current version on the official portal before you book or pay.
