NUMS vs MDCAT: Key Differences and How to Prepare for Both

NUMS entry test and PMC MDCAT are two separate exams. Learn the differences in syllabus, pattern, scoring, and how to prepare for both simultaneously.

Many pre-medical students in Pakistan are confused about the difference between NUMS and MDCAT. Should you take both? Is NUMS harder? Does your MDCAT score work for Army Medical College? This guide clarifies everything about the NUMS entry test versus the PMC MDCAT.

MDCAT vs NUMS: Basic Difference

MDCAT is conducted by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) and is required for admission to all public and private medical colleges in Pakistan (except NUMS-affiliated and AKU).

NUMS entry test is conducted by the National University of Medical Sciences and is required for admission to Army Medical College (AMC), CMH Lahore Medical College, and other NUMS-affiliated institutions.

These are two completely separate exams. You need to register and appear for each one independently.

Key Differences in Detail

1. General Knowledge Section

NUMS includes a General Knowledge (GK) section that MDCAT does not. This covers Pakistan studies, Islamic studies, current affairs, and basic general knowledge. You need to prepare this extra section specifically for NUMS.

2. Negative Marking

NUMS typically applies negative marking (0.25 marks deducted for wrong answers), while MDCAT in recent years has not applied negative marking. This changes your strategy — in NUMS, leave a question blank if you are completely unsure.

3. Aggregate Weightage

NUMS gives 60% weightage to its entry test versus 50% for MDCAT. This means NUMS performance matters even more than MDCAT for your aggregate. A strong NUMS score can compensate significantly for lower board marks.

4. Competition Level

NUMS is considered more competitive because:

  • Fewer seats (AMC and affiliated colleges have limited intake).
  • High merit cutoffs — AMC Rawalpindi typically requires 90%+ aggregate.
  • Many high-achieving students target NUMS specifically.

Can You Take Both MDCAT and NUMS?

Yes, absolutely. In fact, most serious pre-medical students take both exams. There is no rule preventing you from appearing in both. Since the syllabi overlap significantly (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English), preparing for one naturally helps with the other.

How to Prepare for Both Simultaneously

  • Use MDCAT as your base: The core syllabus (Bio, Chem, Phys, English) is similar. Prepare these thoroughly for MDCAT.
  • Add NUMS-specific prep: Dedicate 2–3 weeks for General Knowledge, Pakistan Studies, and Islamic Studies questions that appear in NUMS.
  • Practice negative marking strategy: When solving NUMS mock tests, practice deciding when to guess and when to leave blank.
  • Solve NUMS past papers separately: NUMS questions tend to be more analytical and conceptual compared to MDCAT.

NUMS-Affiliated Colleges

The NUMS entry test gives you access to:

  • Army Medical College (AMC), Rawalpindi
  • CMH Lahore Medical College
  • CMH Multan Institute of Medical Sciences
  • CMH Kharian Medical College
  • Quetta Institute of Medical Sciences
  • Wah Medical College

These colleges are highly regarded and some offer military-affiliated benefits and structured career paths.

Which is Harder: MDCAT or NUMS?

Students generally consider NUMS slightly harder because of negative marking, the extra GK section, and more analytical questions. However, the level of difficulty varies by year. The best approach is to prepare well for both and let your scores decide where you get admitted.

Take both exams, prepare their common syllabus together, and add targeted preparation for NUMS-specific content. This approach maximizes your chances of getting into a top medical college in Pakistan.
