NLE Step 2 Result Pakistan: What to Expect and What to Do Next
Waiting for your NLE Step 2 result? Here is how PMDC releases results, what the pass mark means, what to do if you did not pass, and the exact steps to take once you clear Step 2.
What Is NLE Step 2?
NLE Step 2 is the second and final component of Pakistan's National Licensing Examination, conducted by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). While Step 1 tests basic medical sciences, Step 2 assesses your ability to apply clinical knowledge across core specialties: Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Psychiatry. Passing Step 2 - alongside Step 1 - is the final requirement before PMDC grants full medical registration.
How Are NLE Step 2 Results Released?
PMDC releases NLE Step 2 results through its official online portal. Results are not sent by email or post; you must log in to the PMDC candidate portal using your CNIC and registration credentials to check your result. PMDC typically announces results within four to eight weeks of the examination date, though this can vary by session.
Result announcements are usually accompanied by a notification on the PMDC website and shared through official PMDC social media channels. Avoid relying on rumours about result dates circulating in WhatsApp groups - check the official portal directly.
What Does the Result Show?
The PMDC result portal displays whether you have passed or failed the examination, along with your score. The pass mark (cut-off score) is set by PMDC internally for each session using a standard-setting process; it is not fixed at a percentage like 50% or 60%. This means the precise cut-off may vary slightly between sessions depending on overall candidate performance and examination difficulty.
What If You Did Not Pass?
Failing NLE Step 2 is not the end. PMDC allows candidates to re-sit the examination after the prescribed waiting period. There is no limit on the number of attempts, though each attempt requires a new registration and fee payment. If you did not pass:
- Review your score breakdown by subject. Identify which clinical areas cost you the most marks. These become your priority subjects for the re-sit.
- Do not simply repeat the same preparation. If your previous approach did not produce a pass, a different strategy is needed - more MCQ practice, more past paper review, or focused reading in specific weak areas.
- Set a target date for the next session. Giving yourself a defined timeline prevents preparation from becoming indefinite and unfocused.
What to Do After Passing NLE Step 2
Clearing Step 2 triggers a short but important series of administrative steps:
- Apply for PMDC registration. Log in to the PMDC portal and submit your full registration application. You will need your Step 1 and Step 2 result certificates, your degree, house job completion certificate, CNIC, and photographs.
- Pay the registration fee. The online payment is made through the PMDC portal. Once processed, your registration certificate is issued.
- Download and print your registration certificate. This is the document you will present to employers, hospital administrations, and licensing authorities.
What PMDC Registration Enables
Full PMDC registration opens the following:
- Legal practice in Pakistan - you can now work as a licensed medical officer in any hospital, clinic, or health facility
- Postgraduate training - PMDC registration is a prerequisite for FCPS Part 1, MRCP, and most other postgraduate programmes in Pakistan
- Gulf licensing - the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain all accept PMDC registration as part of their healthcare worker licensing process
- Medical employment contracts - most government and private sector medical positions require a valid PMDC registration number
Preparing for Your NLE Step 2 Re-sit
If you are preparing for another attempt, the most effective change you can make is increasing your MCQ exposure. Many candidates who fail Step 2 have read extensively but not practised enough questions under timed conditions. Clinical vignette MCQs - the format PMDC uses - require a different skill set from essay answers or oral examinations. The only way to build that skill is by doing large volumes of well-explained MCQ practice.
