5 MCQ Strategies That Actually Work in Competitive Exams
Knowing the content is only half the battle. These five battle-tested strategies will help you score higher on any MCQ-based competitive exam in Pakistan.
Multiple-choice questions seem straightforward — four options, one answer. Yet most students lose marks not because they don't know the material, but because they fall into predictable traps.
1. Read the Stem Before Looking at Options
Cover the options and formulate your own answer first. If your answer matches a choice closely, that is very likely correct.
2. Use the Process of Elimination
Even when unsure, eliminate one or two wrong options. This improves your odds from 25% to 33% or 50%.
3. Watch Out for "All of the Above"
"All of the above" is correct more often than you expect. If you can confirm two options are definitely correct, choose it with confidence.
4. Flag and Return — Don't Get Stuck
Flag difficult questions and move on. Return in a second pass. Coming back with fresh eyes often reveals the answer.
5. Track Your Timing
For a 200-question paper in 3 hours, you have 54 seconds per question. Check your pace at the 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 marks of the exam.
